COECO History

COECO Bulding 1921COECO (Carolina Office Equipment Company) is one of the oldest and most respected office equipment companies in the Southeastern United States. The company was formed in 1921 by Grover Robbins and operated by him until his untimely death in 1943. His son, Austin Robbins managed and directed the company during the next 50 years. During this period of time the company experienced tremendous growth and established itself as a respected industry leader. His sons, Bill and Chuck Robbins joined the company in the early 1970's and helped manage the continual and accelerated growth of the company during the 1980's and 1990's. New stores and new product lines were added during this time and what had started as a small office supply store in Rocky Mount had grown into a diversified office products company that included stores in Clinton, Fayetteville, Greenville, Kitty Hawk, Lumberton, New Bern, Raleigh, Rocky Mount, Virginia Beach, and Wilmington. The sales and service organizations represented the best product lines in the industry and were second to none throughout the region.

COECO had grown into a complete office products company based in Rocky Mount and has been owned by the Robbins family for 86 years. However as the markets changed so did the business and during the mid 1990's the supply and furniture division were eventually sold to a national company. The Office Systems and Digital Technology Business was retained by the third generation of the Robbins family.  COECO companies continued to grow in the 1990’s, as Automated Office Systems of North Carolina, Inc. and Electronic Office Systems, Inc. were acquired and merged into COECO. The growth trend continued into the millennium as Com, Inc. Carolina Document Technologies, Inc. and COMDOC of Wilmington were also purchased and merged into the COECO companies, followed in 2006-2007 by the additional purchases of CSI and Technocom in the Greensboro/Triad areas.

In 2005 COECO consolidated all of it’s companies in North Carolina and Virginia into a single corporation known as COECO Office Systems, Inc.

Today COECO is owned and managed by the majority shareholder, chairman and CEO, Chuck Robbins.  Other shareholders and regional presidents include Ken Stallings, Harry McDonald, Gerald Ange and Vice President of Service, Dan Carr.  Chris Doerfler serves as treasurer and controller.

COECO is proud of it’s achievements of the past, and will continue to build and grow as we move forward providing a bright tomorrow for all of us as we celebrate our 86th anniversary in 2007.
